Abraham

Abraham made his home in the desert, he was literally nomadic, moving from place to place with his tent.  Abraham answered the call to leave God and journey to place unknown to him, God was asking him to step out in faith.  The bible tells us that he chose to believe God multiple times over what he could see or was experiencing.  Our wilderness will also require faith, we don't know what we are doing or where we are going but we know or must believe God is leading us.  The invitation to the wilderness is a sacrificial yes, giving up your order or version of your life for Gods plan for you.

Abraham also used the wilderness to transition from one place to another, hi faith is what led the way.  Perhaps God wants you to go in a different direction and is using your wilderness experience as a method to change your course.  Believe in what He says and stay the course.

Jesus

Jesus gave us the perfect example of a wilderness triumph, there are many things we can learn from this, however the main lesson i want to share it this.  God is ever present in our wilderness but so also is Satan.  Jesus spent a time of 40 days and nights fasting in the wilderness, but it was made significantly worst by the temptation that He faced.  The wilderness is a time of testing.  You will be challenged and tested to see if you will still believe God despite what you see, hear or feel.  Satan knew Jesus was fasting and therefore his first temptation was with food (bread) what if Jesus had given in? we will also have the opportunity to give in whilst in the wilderness.  Remember the children of Israel? despite the miracles God had done for them, they continued to moan against Him, not believe Him and ultimately chose to dance and praise an idol over God.  Although the bible doesn't explicitly say it, but Satan was on their journey of freedom with them, doing his most to get them to abandon God and His word.  There is only one way, and that's God's way.

Moses

Much of Moses's life involved wilderness experiences.  From a baby he was separated from his family, his people, his culture and his God.  Whilst he most likely enjoyed the lifestyle Egypt brought, his isolation from who he was led to one of the biggest conflicts in his life, it resulted in him killing a man.  Whilst fleeing the crime scene, he was called (literally) by God in the Wilderness in the form of a burning bush.  Here is what we can learn from Him

1) He only heard the voice of God once he was in the desert.   Maybe God had tried to speak to him before but the distraction of the Egyptian lifestyle stopped him from listening

2) He spent 40 years in the desert before God sent him back to Egypt, sometimes the wilderness is necessary to rid us of what held us captive, to help change our ways.

3) God used him to take others (the children of Israel) back to the place that changed him into

Paul

What can we learn from one of the New Testaments most valuable contributors.  The first thing i want you to realise that God is more concerned that you are ready or mature for the assignment He has for you than your timeline.  Paul was converted on the road to Damascus, however went to Arabia for approx. 3 years before meeting with the other disciples (his first wilderness) following Jerusalem he went back to his hometown  of Tarsus for a further 10 years (known as the silent years).  These were times of learning his trade, preparation of what's to come and time with God.  Following his silent years, he was called by Barnabas for his first big mission starting in Antioch.  If we are to do anything great for Christ a wilderness is vital for our growth
